The Impact of Fresh Dog Food

Increasing Canine Life Expectancies

Why Feed Fresh?

Let's start with some good news:

American dog life expectancies are on the rise.

Thanks to a continuous increase in care and nutrition provided by pet owners over the last 20 years, we’ve seen an impressive 11% growth in the life expectancy of dogs across the USA.

This positive trend is expected to continue, fueled by a key factor – feeding fresh dog foods.
Fresh Dog Food vs Kibble Fresh Dog Food compared to Kibble

Which would you rather eat?

Fresh dog foods are anticipated to play a significant role in further increasing pet life expectancies in the next 20 years. Until recently, unless you were cooking from home, commercially available fresh foods for dogs were a rarity. This exciting development is particularly thrilling for us at Good Pup Food Co, as we believe there’s no better cause than contributing to the extension of the lives of our most beloved family members through elevating the nutrition and energy they receive from their food.

So what do you think? Are you ready to enhance your dog’s nutrition with the best fresh dog food available, made here locally in Reno, NV? Keep reading why below, then explore Good Pup Food Co’s recipes and join us in promoting a healthier, longer life for your canine companions.

We want all goodpups to live the longest happiest life possible.

What can you expect to see by switching to fresh dog food?

Fresh foods means Less is more.

Look up any kibble food calculator and write down the caloric recommendation it gives for your dog. Then go to any fresh food calculator and enter the same info. What you’ll find is that fresh food calculators recommend less calories per day for your pet. Why? The answer is bioavailability.

Your dog is able to utilize more of what is in the food when it hasn’t been stripped of nearly all it’s original moisture content, heated into oblivion, had colors and preservatives added, among other nasty kibble traits. Eating more natural fresh foods makes your dog’s gut biome happy and efficient.  You’ll notice the difference almost immediately. Afflictions many of us probably thought was just part of being a dog, things like constant itching, stinky and frequent farts, shedding heavily year-round, runny goopy eyes, all these things subside or vanish once fresh foods are introduced.

Poop. You’ll see a whole lot less of it.

It’s fairly shocking how much different your dog’s bowel movements will become once you’ve fully transitioned to fresh dog food. Not only do they become more natural, (more similar to scat of a wild animal, where you see a few undigested ingredients, and it’s just less nasty in general) but you’ll also notice the size of these movements decrease pretty drastically. We didn’t measure, but ballpark in our direct experience we’d wager very close to a 40-50% reduction in the overall volume of poo.

It sorta makes you wonder if there’s lots of filler in this kibble we’ve been programmed to feed our pets… or that their bodies are struggling to process its contents due to poor ingredient quality and harsh manufacturing methods…

Investing in fresh foods will yield better vet visits and a longer life for your dog.

The two previous bullet points allude to an overarching theme with fresh foods: It is more nutritious and better for your dog. This recurring added nutrition they get from fresh foods will yield better vet visits and better longevity outcomes. This is our main motivation for existing as a company. We want 20 year old dogs to be the norm, not the exception. We know fresh foods is the key to making this a reality.

And lastly, your best friend will also probably be giving you some very direct feedback at meal time.

Maybe not the most important part of this equation, but we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t pretty damn satisfying seeing your dog’s over-the-top reaction to being fed this kind of food.  We all know our dog’s will love us unequivocally, regardless of what we put in their bowls. A dog’s love is quite unwavering. But it is our job to give them the nutrition they need in the best way possible, they have no other resource but us. Fresh foods are that answer. We can’t wait for your pup to become part of our growing family.

USDA Certified Meats: Elevating Dog Nutrition Beyond Traditional Kibbles

USDA Certified meats are always the #1 ingredient in Good Pup Food.

This isn’t “meat as the #1 ingredient” like so many kibbles boast. This is human-grade, same-stuff-you-buy-in-the-grocery-store, quality meats as the #1 ingredient.

When you are a fresh food company, you can’t hide your ingredients behind coloring and pellet formation. What you see is what you get. Good Pup’s meat content averages around 55% and can be as high as 60% per package. USDA certified means these ingredients are of such a high quality they are approved for sale in grocery stores to us hoomans. USDA certified meat facilities are held to incredibly high standards. To be USDA certified, these facilities are inspected every single day to ensure quality and health standards are being met.

The USDA meats we’ve selected are a lean version of what your dog would find in the wild. We balance lean muscle meats with nutrient-dense organ meats, achieving a harmonious blend that caters to your dog’s overall health. We aim for our meat content ratio to be around 75% muscle meat (like chicken breast or tri-tip) and around 25% organ meats (like heart and liver). This ratio is close to what they would find if they still had to stalk and eat prey. Fats are an important part of a dog’s diet, but we keep them closely in check and only select leaner offerings.  Essential fats when incorporated in just the right amounts ensure a well-rounded diet.

Sometimes we wonder if our pup’s are eating better than us…

fresh dog food ingredients - sweet potatoes

Good Pup Food features high quality carbs that deliver lots of extras.

Carbohydrates are needed in a dog’s daily diet as they provide energy in the form of glucose and are a main source of dietary fiber.  But not all carbs are created equal, and not all dog foods get it right.

In every recipe, we prioritize the use of organic sweet potatoes, often as the primary carbohydrate source. Sweet potatoes are celebrated as a superior carbohydrate source for both humans and dogs. This is definitely not filler like so many carbohydrate sources in kibble. We also don’t rely on our carbs to achieve protein goals like many lower end kibbles do. Our carbs are here for energy, aka carbohydrates and calories, not to pad protein stats. Because of that we deliver carbs in a proper non-excessive amount.

What sets sweet potatoes apart is their rich nutritional profile. Packed with essential vitamins such as A and C, potassium, and abundant antioxidants. Sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of goodness. Additionally, they stand out as one of the most dense sources of dietary fiber, promoting optimal digestive health for your pup. Beyond the nutritional benefits, most dogs absolutely love the taste of sweet potatoes, making it a guilt-free win for both you and your furry companion.

Our secondary carb, brown jasmine rice, is much more carb and calorie dense than sweet potato, but not quite as strong in most vitamin categories, which makes them a perfect pairing. Elevate your dog’s diet with our recipes that prioritize nutrient-rich carbs, ensuring they enjoy both a tasty and health-conscious meal.

Good Pup’s recipe looks to maximize veggie & supplement retention.

We look to prioritize the absorption of essential nutrients from veggies and supplements in your dog’s diet.

While dogs are technically omnivorous, the inclusion of plant materials in their diet needs careful consideration due to dog’s limited ability to digest cellulose. Dogs lack the enzyme cellulase, which is required for the digestion of cellulose, a carbohydrate present in plant cell walls. This explains why if you feed a dog a carrot, you’ll typically find large portions of it come out the other end relatively undigested.

Despite this limitation, they can and still do receive loads of good things from veggies, especially when prepared properly. Good Pup’s veterinarian-approved ratio of veggies ensures your dog receives abundant vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants not only in optimal amounts, but also in a way that is maximized. Each of our recipes includes a thoughtfully selected mix of green beans, carrots, kale, broccoli, and zucchini. All of these are cooked for the absolute minimum amount of time, then blanched with ice water. Finally we  dice to a near mince, ensuring that some of that inability to break down the cellulose is negated, because more of the plants contents are accessible.

To complement the naturally derived nutrients from vegetables, our formula includes carefully chosen natural supplements. Omega-3s and Omega-6s are sourced from ground whole flaxseeds and (coming soon!)responsibly sourced fish oils. Lastly, we enhance calcium levels by incorporating highly bioavailable free-range organic egg shells. Unlike the common practice of using the meat industry byproduct, “bone meal” which is in nearly all kibbles, we opt for a superior and more bioavailable approach to calcium using ground egg shells.

Not only does using finely ground egg shells for calcium keep our product 100% human grade, (pulverized egg shells are a great add to your own smoothies for a huge calcium boost) but egg shells are also a more natural way for your pup to receive the calcium they need, because they are not overly processed like bone meal is, making the calcium content within them more readily bioavailable.
